Earthquake in Pakistan creates a New Island

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit south-central Pakistan on Tuesday this week. Reports of hundreds of casualties highlight the awful scale of the tragedy, made more difficult for rescuers by the remote location of the quake, 270km north of Karachi.

Popeye Village in Malta

Popeye Village, also known as Sweethaven Village, is a group of rustic and ramshackle wooden buildings located at Anchor Bay in the north-west corner of the Mediterranean island of Malta, two miles from the village of Mellieħa.
It was built as a film set for the production of the 1980 live-action musical feature film Popeye, produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions and starring Robin Williams. Today it is open to the public as an open-air museum and family entertainment complex.

World’s Largest Swimming Pool

San Alfonso del Mar is a resort in Algarrobo, Chile, also known for its world’s largest swimming pool according to the Guinness World Records. The resort is owned by a Chilean biochemist and businessman Fernando Fischmann, the head of Crystal Lagoon Corporation – the company that designed the gigantic pool. He used the patented technology to “harvest, filter and permanently recirculate ocean water”. “This advance provides something that until now was not technically possible – the generation of monumental masses of water in a crystalline state to provide a beach life environment and aquatic sports at the top level,” Fernando Fischmann says.

The Royal Suite at the Burj Al-Arab hotel is an outstanding 780 sq. meters villa. It sports 2 master bedrooms a reception salon, dinning room, a private cinema and spa, it even has its own internal elevator between different levels of the suite. A night here cost as much as $27,000 with a complementary Rolls Royce and a chauffeur.

ree Holes Painter - China: In the city of Shijiazhuang, China, an artist has brought smiles to pedestrians by painting drab tree holes and turning them into works of art. Since February, over eleven tree trunks on Jiuzhong Street have become the canvas for aspiring 23 year-old art student, Wang Yue. Each piece takes Wang about two hours to complete. The local environmental protection bureau has approved the artworks and publicly stated that the paints used will not harm the tree and will eventually wash away over time. Wang Yue’s artwork has received much praise in the Chinese media. The splash of colour has been welcomed by the citizens of Shijiazhuang, a city of over ten million people, known for having some of the worst air pollution in the world.

Amazing Pencil Sculptures

Hungarian artist, known only by his nickname cerkahegyzo, manages to produce incredibly detailed sculptures by carving on pencil lead. Using simple tools such as razor blades and needles, he painstakingly files away the wooden casing and then carves at the exposed lead to produce impossibly difficult sculptures like linked chains. On hand are other tools like sandpaper and polishing stones to shape his intricate designs.

Old Airplane Turned Into a Kindergarten - In the Georgian city of Rustavi, an old but fully functional Yakovlev Yak-42 aeroplane has been transformed into a kindergarten classroom. Head teacher Gari Chapidze bought the plane from Georgian Airways and arranged for it to be transported to the city of Rustavi, where he refurbished the interiors with educational equipment, games and toys but left the cockpit instruments intact so they could be used as play tools. There are around 1,500 buttons in the small Soviet-era plane’s cockpit which the kindergarten’s 15 children can play with as they imitate real pilots taking off.

The Kalasha (Kalasha: Kaĺaśa, Nuristani: Kasivo) or Kalash, are a Dardic indigenous people residing in the Chitral District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. They speak the Kalasha language, from the Dardic family of the Indo-Aryan branch, and are considered a unique tribe among the Indo-Aryan peoples of Pakistan.
The neighboring Nuristani people of the adjacent Nuristan (historically known as Kafiristan) province of Afghanistan once practiced the same polytheistic religion as the Kalash. However, by the late 19th century much of Nuristan had been converted to Islam, but the Kalasha of Chitral maintained their own separate cultural traditions.

The Shams Power Company opened their Shams 1 concentrated solar power station this week in Abu Dhabi. The station generates 100 MW and can power 20,000 homes while reducing CO2 emissions by 175,000 tons per year. Not to be outdone, two companies in California proposed solar towers yesterday that will generate 500 MW and power about 200,000 homes.
